Important Dates
- about 5000 B.C. the first trephinations were conducted in South America.[1]
- 1960s - the first attempts of deep brain stimulation were conducted,[1] they were abandoned due to high mortality rate[2]
- 1987 - the research on deep brain stimulation of the thalamic nucleus ventralis intermedius to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease was published[3]
- 1993 - deep brain stimulation of subthalamic nucleus was introduced as a treatment of Parkinson's disease.[4]
- 1997 - deep brain stimulation was approved as a treatment of Parkinson's disease by FDA.[5]
